BiometeorologieBiometeorologyΒιομετεωρολογία
The science of the effects of weather and climate on living organisms. When it concerns people, it is called human biometeorology.Η επιστήμη των επιδράσεων του καιρού και του κλίματος στους ζωντανούς οργανισμούς.
Das Klima, wie es auf Lebewesen wirkt. Es fragt nicht nur „Wie warm ist es?“, sondern „Was bedeutet das für den Menschen?“Climate as it acts on living beings. It asks not only “How warm is it?” but “What does this mean for people?”Το κλίμα όπως επιδρά στους ζωντανούς οργανισμούς.
The state in which people find their thermal surroundings pleasant, neither too warm nor too cold.Η κατάσταση κατά την οποία οι άνθρωποι βρίσκουν το θερμικό περιβάλλον ευχάριστο, ούτε πολύ ζεστό ούτε πολύ κρύο.
Gefühlte TemperaturPerceived temperatureΑισθητή θερμοκρασία
The temperature people actually feel. Besides air temperature it takes radiation, wind and humidity into account. The German Weather Service uses it for its heat warnings: a warning of strong heat stress is issued from a perceived temperature of 32 °C, of extreme heat stress from 38 °C. For older people extreme stress already applies from 36 °C.Η θερμοκρασία που πραγματικά νιώθει ο άνθρωπος.
PETPETPET
Physiological Equivalent Temperature: the air temperature at which, in a typical indoor situation, the body’s heat balance would be the same as outdoors. A common index in urban climate and planning.Φυσιολογικά Ισοδύναμη Θερμοκρασία: η θερμοκρασία αέρα στην οποία, σε τυπικό εσωτερικό χώρο, ο θερμικός ισολογισμός του σώματος θα ήταν ίδιος με τον εξωτερικό. Mittlere Strahlungstemperatur (Tmrt)Mean radiant temperature (Tmrt)Μέση θερμοκρασία ακτινοβολίας (Tmrt)
A measure of how much heat and solar radiation reaches the body from all directions. In sunshine on a square it is much higher than in the shade. The RayMan model calculates it.Μέτρο του πόση θερμική και ηλιακή ακτινοβολία φτάνει στο σώμα από όλες τις κατευθύνσεις.
Cities are warmer than their surroundings, above all at night. Causes are sealed surfaces, buildings, less greenery and waste heat.Οι πόλεις είναι θερμότερες από την ύπαιθρο, ιδίως τη νύχτα.
Sommertag, Heißer Tag, TropennachtSummer day, hot day, tropical nightΘερινή ημέρα, καυτή ημέρα, τροπική νύχτα

UV-Strahlung und UV-IndexUV radiation and UV indexΥπεριώδης ακτινοβολία και δείκτης UV
The UV index is an internationally standardised measure of the strength of the sun’s UV radiation, independent of skin type. It runs from low (1 to 2) through medium (3 to 5) and high (6 to 7) to very high (8 to 10) and extreme (11 and above). At low levels no protection is needed. From level 3: seek shade, wear a hat, clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen. From level 8 you should avoid being outdoors where possible. Too much UV can cause sunburn and eye inflammation in the short term and promote skin cancer in the long term.Ο δείκτης UV είναι ένα διεθνώς τυποποιημένο μέγεθος για την ένταση της υπεριώδους ακτινοβολίας του ήλιου, ανεξάρτητα από τον τύπο δέρματος.
PollenflugPollen season and pollen countΕποχή γύρης
The time when plants such as hazel, alder, birch, grasses or mugwort release their pollen into the air. For people with pollen allergy (hay fever) this means sneezing, itchy eyes and a blocked nose. How strong the pollen flight is depends on when the plants start to flower and on the weather, above all wind and precipitation. During the pollen season the German Weather Service issues a daily pollen hazard index for 27 regions of Germany. This helps to plan time outdoors and ventilation.Η περίοδος κατά την οποία φυτά όπως η φουντουκιά, η σκλήθρα, η σημύδα, τα αγρωστώδη ή το αψίνθιο διασπείρουν τη γύρη τους στον αέρα.

Warum fühlt sich dieselbe Temperatur mal heißer, mal kühler an?Why does the same temperature feel hotter at one time and cooler at another?Γιατί η ίδια θερμοκρασία νιώθεται άλλοτε πιο ζεστή και άλλοτε πιο δροσερή;

Because the body responds to the whole heat balance, not just air temperature. Sun, radiation from walls, wind, humidity, clothing and effort change how much heat it can lose.Επειδή το σώμα ανταποκρίνεται σε ολόκληρο τον θερμικό ισολογισμό και όχι μόνο στη θερμοκρασία του αέρα.

Warum sind Hitzenächte so belastend?Why are hot nights so stressful?Γιατί οι ζεστές νύχτες είναι τόσο επιβαρυντικές;

At night the body should recover. If it stays warm, sleep quality falls and the strain of the day is not relieved. In cities especially, homes hardly cool down. The German Weather Service therefore also takes night-time indoor temperatures into account in its heat warnings.Τη νύχτα το σώμα πρέπει να αναπαυθεί.

Was bringt Grün in der Stadt?What does greenery do for a city?Τι προσφέρει το πράσινο στην πόλη;

Trees above all give shade, and shade reduces the radiation load most. They also evaporate water and cool the air a little. For people what counts in the end is how comfortable they feel in the shade.Τα δέντρα προσφέρουν πρωτίστως σκιά, και η σκιά μειώνει περισσότερο απ' όλα την επιβάρυνση από ακτινοβολία.

Reicht die Lufttemperatur nicht aus, um Hitze zu beurteilen?Is air temperature not enough to judge heat?Δεν αρκεί η θερμοκρασία του αέρα για να κρίνουμε τη ζέστη;

It is a start but often misleading. Two places with the same air temperature can differ clearly in stress, for example a square in the sun and a park in the shade. That is why bioclimatology uses indices such as PET and UTCI.Είναι μια αρχή, συχνά όμως παραπλανητική.

Wie warne ich mich selbst vor Hitze?How can I warn myself about heat?Πώς μπορώ να ενημερωθώ για τη ζέστη;

Follow the heat warnings of the German Weather Service (strong heat stress from a perceived temperature of 32 °C, extreme from 38 °C) and look for shade and cool places nearby. The Wochenblick on this site shows the situation of the week for Freiburg.Παρακολουθήστε τις προειδοποιήσεις καύσωνα της Γερμανικής Μετεωρολογικής Υπηρεσίας (ισχυρή καταπόνηση από αισθητή θερμοκρασία 32 °C, ακραία από 38 °C) και αναζητήστε σκιά και δροσερά μέρη κοντά σας.

Ist Wetterfühligkeit Einbildung?Is weather sensitivity imagination?Είναι η μετεωροπάθεια φαντασία;

Nein. No. Many people feel complaints when the weather changes, and research takes it seriously. Exactly why is still being studied, and so far there is no simple explanation for everyone.Όχι.
